The PBSA was initiated by the Thalassaemia International Foundation (TIF), with its headquarters situated in the Republic of Cyprus.
PBSA's mission is to advocate for the highest standard of blood safety for all in Europe.
The Alliance is not engaged in any political activities or activities for profit. No association or institution can be expelled or refused admission because of the race, creed or religious denomination of its members.
The establishment of PBSA is the culmination of two years of dedicated work by patient organisations advocating for the rights of patients with a range of diseases, yet committed to the shared goal 'to advocate for the highest level of blood safety for all in Europe' and to act as a point of reference for national health authorities, the World Health Organisation (WHO), European health institutions, the Council of Europe (CoE) and the European Union (EU) when seeking a patients' perspective on blood safety.
PBSA has been registered as a non-profit Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Cyprus, in accordance with its Company Law. Its offices are hosted in the headquarters of the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF). Founding members of the Alliance are patients' organisations from Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Its first Board of Directors was elected in Vienna, Austria, in 2005, and consists of representatives of patients' organisations from Austria, Cyprus, Italy and the United Kingdom.
