Our objectives

The objectives for which the Alliance was established are:

  • To promote the fundamental right and duty to safety of all patients in need of blood transfusions and blood products:
    - To ensure the availability of sufficient amounts of safe blood to meet all treatment needs.
    - Through education of all staff handling blood components to reduce human error.
    - Through implementation of and access to proactive blood safety technologies for each patient across Europe.
    - Through haemovigilance.
    - Through adequate access to blood transfusion services, free of charge to the patient.
  • To raise public awareness of all issues concerning blood safety on a local and European level.
  • To promote the development and adoption of directives and regulations that improve safety standards of European blood transfusion services, including blood, blood products, bone marrow and stem cells (including the European Blood Directive 2002/98/EC).
  • To empower patients to influence national and European health policy makers.
  • To provide a forum for patients, healthcare professionals, health policy makers and relevant industry with an interest in blood safety.
  • To act as a point of reference for national health authorities, the European Commission and other European institutions, when seeking the opinions of patients on blood safety.
